CERN Data Protection Policy

In carrying out the mission with which it is entrusted by its Member States, CERN collects and uses personal data related to individuals interacting with the Organization. This includes CERN contributors (members of the personnel, consultants, on-site contractors, or individuals engaged on behalf of CERN), beneficiaries of the Pension Fund, prospective personnel, suppliers, and members of the public.

To ensure appropriate processing of personal data, CERN is committed to managing it in accordance with the CERN Code of Conduct and Operational Circular No. 11: The Processing of Personal Data at CERN (OC 11), which together constitute CERN’s internal data protection framework.

CERN educates its personnel on managing personal data responsibly. This includes efforts to:

  • Collect and process only essential personal data
  • Use personal data efficiently and only for the intended purposes
  • Maintain accurate records of data processing and make them available through privacy notices
  • Inform individuals about how to exercise their rights
  • Ensure accuracy of the personal data collected
  • Take necessary security measures to protect personal data
  • Avoid transferring personal data without appropriate safeguards
  • Retain data only as long as necessary for CERN's operational needs
  • Securely destroy data that is no longer required

CERN has established the Office of Data Privacy, which acts as a centre of expertise for data subjects and for personnel and external partners involved in personal data processing. It is headed by the Data Privacy Adviser.

In addition, CERN has created the Data Protection Commission, its independent supervisory authority. The Commission monitors compliance with OC 11 and reviews complaints submitted by data subjects.
